What is RockBall™? RockBall™ is a recreational game that can be played inside or out, on a variety of playing surfaces, using a RockBall™ set. (See a diagram here.) A set consists of a rock-like rebounding surface, boundary lines, and a ball. The game can be played by two or more people in various versions. |
How is it played? The ball is thrown against the "Rock." Opponents (or opposing teams) rally, with one team throwing while the other team tries to catch the rebound. You can decide to let the ball drop out-of-bounds to win the point, but if it lands in bounds you lose the point. If you catch it, it's your turn to throw, which you must do from the spot at which you made the catch. |
Who Can Play? Two people can play singles. Four can play doubles. There are also versions of the game that allow any other number of players to participate. Each player needs only to be able to catch and throw a ball, and new variations of the standard rules are encouraged. |
Where Do You Play? RockBall™ can be enjoyed on any flat or nearly-flat surface where enough space exists (about 40' x 40'). There may be more “diving” catches on sand or grass, but the game is just as enjoyable in the driveway or gymnasium. (Note: inclined surfaces, such as a beach, work just as well as flat ones.) |
How Do You Keep Score? Games go quickly if you use "rally" scoring, which means the team that wins the rally earns a point- no matter who served. The first team to score 15 points (by at least a two-point margin) wins. If you win a point, you get to serve. |
And this is fun, because… The fun lies in the rock itself. Because it's not a flat surface, the ball rebounds at unpredictable angles. You can send your opponents sprawling from one side of the court to the other, but exactly where the ball is headed- nobody knows! A hard throw keeps your opponents back, while a drop-shot can quickly end a rally. The combination of strategy and skill make RockBall™ an addictive pastime. |

What Do I Need To Get Started? The “Rock” Obviously, not a solid piece of granite! This is a fiberglass surface, hinged down the center for easy handling. Adjustable legs allow the rebounding surface angle to be set to the player’s preference. The Boundary Lines These come pre-measured and are set up in no time. For sand or grass playing surfaces, stakes are included to hold the corners of the court in place. On hard surfaces, tape or chalk may be preferable. The Ball A glorified tennis-ball or (if you lose yours) a plain old tennis ball will suffice. |
